Yum Hoi Malaeng Pu (Hot And Spicy Mussel Salad)


Yam usually consists of a type of meat or seafood, and basically fish sauce, lemon juice and chili. This particular variation is prepared with mussel meat. Thai people usually eat yum-type dishes as an appetizer or snack. But it is not uncommon to have Yam as a part of our main meal.


 

Ingredients:

400 grams mussel meat

4 shallots

3 stalks lemon grass

A hand full mint leaves

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2 tablespoons fish sauce

10 Thai peppers

1 cup water

 
Preparation:

1. Rinse the mussel meat in water or soak it in hot water. Drain off water and set aside.

2. Wash mint leaves.

3. Finely slice lemon grass use only3 inches from the bottom of each stalk.

4. Peel off the shallot skin then wash the dirt and finely slice.

5. Use flat side of a knife to flatten those Thai peppers just to break the skin.

 
Cooking Instructions:

1. Marinate the season in a mixing bowl by adding shallots, lemon grass, Thai peppers, fish sauce, and lemon juice.

2. Add the mussel meat in the bowl,stir and taste.

3. Transfer it onto a severing plate. Top with mint leaves serve with fresh vegetables.


Tips:

You can buy mussel meat or mussels on the half-shell- but mussel meat is far easier to work with.

To make its spicier you can roughly crush red peppers in the mortar.

If you buy fresh mussels clean them and rinse in water. In a big pot, boil water then add mussels and cook it until done for about 5 minutes or until shells open. Remove it from the heat and drain,strain the mussels.
